Introduction

Fall shot with a dramatic blue sky

Edison, New Jersey, located in Middlesex County, is the fifth most populous township in the state. It was known as Raritan Township until 1954 when, wishing to be distinguished from the Raritan Township further up the Raritan River in Hunterdon County, the people of the township voted to re-name their town in honor of the inventor Thomas Alva Edison, who, in the years between 1876 and 1883, had invented the phonograph, the electric light, and many lesser machines in his laboratory at Menlo Park, a section of the township. Earlier, at the turn of the twentieth century, some areas previously included within the town limits separated from the larger community. Metuchen borough separated in 1900 and is, today, entirely surrounded by Edison Township. Highland Park separated in 1904, but retains close ties to Edison.

Surrounding Edison are, to the east, Woodbridge; to the south, the Raritan River across which lie Sayreville, East Brunswick, and New Brunswick; to the southwest by Highland Park; on the west by Piscataway and South Plainfield; and on the north by Scotch Plains and Clark.

It is an ethnically diverse community with excellent transit connections and highly regarded public schools.
