Employment
With the loss of about fourteen hundred jobs in the closing of the Ford Motor Company plant on US 1 in 2003, the local economy might be said to have completed its shift from its industrial, manufacturing past of the twentieth century to a more white collar, health and information management economy for the twenty-first. Some of the large corporations that have their headquarters or main business address in Edison are Chase Manhattan Mortgage Group, U.S. Shipping Partners L.P., Pharmaceutical Formulations Inc., New Brunswick Scientific Co., Hanover Capital Mortgage Holdings Inc., Intelligroup, and Majesco Holdings, Inc. During work days, there is a net influx of more than ten thousand workers, who commute from homes outside of Edison to jobs within the city limits.
