Housing

In 2000, according to census figures, the median value of a house in Edison was $186,900, with household median income at $69,746, family median income at $77,976, and median rent costs at $847 per month. With improved transit connections and more and more New Yorkers interested in living outside of the city since the terrorist attacks in 2001, demand for housing has increased and the supply has remained fairly steady. There is not much open land available for new construction, though there is some talk about developing the site of the Ford Motor Company plant that closed in 2003 as part of a company-wide re-structuring. This new development would include housing and retail outlets, perhaps even a mall. The idea is not universally loved, however, as some nearby residents fear that development would bring more traffic than the existing arterial roads could support. Meanwhile, prices for existing residential properties have been going up fairly steadily for the past three or four years.
